April 20, 1948 - February 8, 2014

James Beavers 65, of rural Collins, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, February 8, 2014, at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2014, at Maxwell High School gymnasium in Maxwell, Iowa. Visitation will be from 1:00 until service time at 3:00 p.m., also at the gym. Memorials may be directed to the family to be designated at a later date. James Alan Beavers was born on April 20, 1948, in Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa. He was the son of Reid and Lorraine (Wallace) Beavers. Jim attended school in the West Marshall Community School District graduating with the class of 1966. Jim attended college at Iowa State University in Ames, receiving his Associates of Applied Science degree in Construction Technology while working at Stanley Consultants. In 1969, Jim enlisted as a Seabee in the United States Navy Construction Battalion. He served our country honorably in Viet Nam, was stationed in Gulf Port, Mississippi, Puerto Rico, and Charleston, South Carolina. While in the service, Jim was united in marriage to Alice Minnick at Olivet Baptist Church in Des Moines, Iowa, on August 21, 1970. After being discharged, Jim, Alice and daughter Jodi moved to rural Collins where he started farming with his parents. Two more children were added to this union, daughter Jennifer and son Michael. In 1977, they moved to the Harlan Carver farm where he raised his family and began farming with his son. Jim has driven a tractor since he was 6 or 7 years old. He raised cattle, hogs, chickens, horses, the occasional sheep, corn, soybeans, sweet corn, oats, and alfalfa hay. His theory was, “Prices can’t be bad in all of them at the same time.” Jim was involved in 4-H and FFA in his younger years and was a member of Farm Bureau, Story County Cattleman’s Association, Iowa Cattleman’s Association. He refereed through the Iowa High School Athletic Union for 16 years, including many games with a grandchild participating. His next favorite past time was watching sports, especially his children and grandchildren. He was the official scorekeeper for CMB varsity basketball games for 26 years. He also enjoyed watching college sports and rooting for his favorite team, the ISU Cyclones. Jim liked playing cards and cribbage and loved watching old westerns. He was a very giving person as evidenced by him reaching the 32 units mark for blood donation.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 43 years, Alice, of rural Collins. Children: Jodi (Scott) Girard of Collins, Iowa, Jennifer (Mike) Gerhart of Rhodes, Iowa, and Michael (Brandy Niles) Beavers of Collins, Iowa. Grandchildren: Ashley, Patrick, Grace, Eliza, and Audrey Girard, Madelyn, Landon and Denton Gerhart and Sydney and Wesley Beavers; his mother: Lorraine Beavers of Collins; siblings: Bev Mills (Cowboy) of Stuart, Iowa, and Frank (LeAnn) Beavers of Colo, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

In death Jim rejoins his father, Reid, and brother, Kenny Beavers.
