From Nevada Evening Journal March 31, 1944

Funeral rites for Mrs. Clarence E. Markland of 911 Eighth street, Nevada, who died so suddenly at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Monday at 11 a. m., will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m., at the Nevada Methodist church, of which she was a longtime active and devoted member. Her pastor Rev. O. E. Cooley will be in charge and burial will be in the Nevada cemetery.

The death of this longtime beloved woman of Nevada took place in the Des Moines hospital following a surgical operation for gall bladder complications from which fro a time she appeared to be making a satisfactory recovery.

Harriet Mabelle, the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James M. Dawson, was born February 18, 1870 near Lexington, Illinois and attended Abington College. At the age of 22 she came to Ioea with her parents where she taught school until her marriage to Clarence E. Markland on March 19, 1893. Since that time she has lived in or around Nevada. She was a member of the First Methodist church of Nevada and the Loyal Sisters Class of that Church. She was also a long-time member of the Sorosis club and the Nevada Women's Club.

She is survived by her husband, Clarence E. Markland and her two daughters, Mrs. Hazel Bivens of Ames and Mrs. Irene Dobson of Nevada, and one grandson, Gordon Bivens of Ames. Also she is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ida Campbell of Lexington, Nebraska and Mrs. Della Henning of Fairbury, Illinois, and a brother, Mr. Frank Dawson of Randall, Iowa.

The body of Mrs. Markland will be at the Lilly Funeral home where it may be viewed by the family and friends until the time of the service.
