Robert James "Jim" Larson, 64, of Waukee, passed away at his home on Dec. 18, 2013. A Celebration of Life Open House will be held from 2 to 5 pm on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013 at Stevens Memorial Chapel, 607 28th St., Ames, with burial of cremated remains to follow at 11 AM on Monday, Dec. 30, 2013 at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery. In keeping with Jim's character and wishes, the family asks that you attend in blue jeans and your favorite t-shirt or sweatshirt.
Jim was born on June 5, 1949 in Ames to Virginia and Clifford Larson. He grew up in Kelley and Ames area and graduated from Ames High School in 1967. Jim proudly served his country in the US Army during the Viet Nam War and was very proud of his Black Horse Division where he served as a lineman and medic. After returning home from the war, Jim worked construction and later became a fulltime member of the Iowa National Guard. After his life in the Guard, Jim became a mail carrier with the US Postal Service until his retirement.
Jim was an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting, fishing and canoeing whenever he had the chance. In June, 1972, Jim married Linda Sansgaard and they raised two sons in Boone. He enjoyed his years coaching Little League Baseball when the boys were young.
Jim is survived by his sons, Jamie (Jill) Larson and Nicholas (Kara) Larson, both of Waukee. He so loved his five grandchildren, Hunter, Garrett, Bodey, Eleanor and Genevieve. He is also survived by his step-father, Clayton Mittlestadt; three brothers, Terry (Holly) Larson of Boone, Steve (Linda) Larson of Ames and Craig (Mary) Mittlestadt of Collins; a sister, Cheri (Steve) Hausner of Radcliffe and many nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
