Rites set for D. Lee Bates

D. Lee Bates, 59, Nevada died about 6:35 p.m. Sunday at the Story County Hospital where he had been a patient bout six weeks.

He was born at Covington, Inc., the son of James W. and Cordelia Bates, and had been a Story County resident most of his life.

Mr. Bates was a farmer in the Nevada area until his retirement several years ago.

He married Dortha Mae Glasgow Dec. 21, 1929 at Marshalltown.

He was a member of the Nevada Methodist Church.

Mr. Bates is survived by his wife, Dortha; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Bates, also of Nevada; a son, James Lee Bates, Rantoul, Ill; a daughter, Cordelia Bates, Marshalltown; four grandchildren; and three brothers, Paul Bates, Route 1, John, also of Nevada, and Gordon Bates, of Colo.

He was preceded in death by a sister, who died in 1941.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday from the Ryan Funeral Home, with the Rev. Byron D. Surface, of the Methodist Evangelical Untied Brethren Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Nevada Cemetery.
