Mrs. G. F. Holland

Mrs. G. F. Holland, 64 and a lifelong resident of Collins township, passed away at noon Saturday at the Iowa Lutheran hospital in Des Moines. She had been in ill health for the past two years or more.

While at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Smith in Des Moines, she became alarmingly ill last Tuesday and on Thursday she was taken to the hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, July 11, at the Collins Methodist church in charge of a former pastor, the Rev. Paul McDade (McDaid) of Des Moines, assisted by the Rev. Ida I Roberts.

Music was furnished by a mixed quartet composed of Mrs. K. W.(Mary) Tomlinson, Mrs. Ray (Zola)Shugart, (supt.)G. E. Holmes and J.(John) R. Witmer, who sang "There's No Disappointment in Heaven", "It Is Well With My Soul," and "Sometime We'll Understand." The pianist was Mrs. Elizabeth Forbes.

The flowers were many and beautiful, and evidenced the great love and respect in which deceased was held. Those in charge of the floral arrangement were Mrs. L. M. Hall and Mrs. A. W. Kracht (Mrs. Milo Hall and Mrs. Alvin Krate )

Pallbearers were E.F.(Frank)Day, Elmer Bence, J.E.Hale, Ray Tiffany, H.R.Sokol and A.W. Kracht (Alvin Krate).

The church was filled to overflowing with sorrowing relatives and friends, many of whom came from a distance to pay their respects to the memory of a dear, departed one.

Interment was in Collins----[line illegible due to crease]----beautiful commital service of Order of the Eastern Star given by the local chapter.

Flora Ellen Holland, daughter of David and Sarah Parker Denniston, was born in Collins township, April 24, 1875, and passed away in the Lutheran hospital at Des Moines Saturday noon, July 8, 1939, at the age of 64 years, 2 months and 14 days.

She grew to womanhood in this community and was graduated from the public school.

On January 2, 1897, she was united in marriage to G. F. Holland, and since that time their home has been in or near Collins.

To this union four children were born, all of whom survived her. They are Loyd D. Holland of Collins; Vern E. Holland of Oak Park, Ill; Mrs. Esther Smith of Des Moines, and Mrs. Marie Ryan of Greeley, Colo. "Early in life she identified herself with the work of the church in the community. First with the Methodist Protestant church during its existence her, and later with the Methodist Episcopal church and its' auxiliaries. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and as long as her health permitted was greatly interested in the American Legion Auxiliary.

She leaves to mourn her passing the husband, the four children, six grandchildren, one brother, H. C. Denniston of Collins; four nieces, a number of more distant relatives and a host of friends.

She loved her home and family with an unselfish love, always placing their interests before her own, and throughout her illness of the past few years she forgot herself in service for others.
