Edward Carlisle Holland was born near Primrose, Lee County, Iowa January 22, 1848, and departed this life at Maxwell, Iowa, September 28, 1921, at the age of seventy-three years, eight months and six days. He spent most of his life in Story and Polk counties, coming here with his parents when five years of age, settling near Iowa Center.

He enlisted in the Civil war and served three years. Two years after his return from the army he was united in marriage with Martha Elizabeth Brubaker, who departed this live June 5, 1920. This union was blessed with four children, three sons and one daughter, three of these are yet living: Frank, of Collins; William and Olive, of Maxwell. Charles passed away August 25, 1914. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and an only sister, Mrs. Eliza McKee of Montezuma, Iowa.

He was converted and united with the Evangelical church a number of years ago and remained faithful in his covenant relationship with his Lord.

He was a member of the Masonic lodge of Maxwell for many years.

He often expressed his readiness to go when called hence.

He lived on the old homestead, west of Maxwell until five years ago, when he retired, and with his family moved to Maxwell, where he has since resided.

Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church of Maxwell, Saturday, October 1, 1921, by Rev. D. C. Busenburg, of Nevada, assisted by Revs. Skogsberg, of Iowa Center, and J.W. Everds, of the Presbyterian church of Maxwell. Burial took place at the Maxwell cemetery, where the American Legion had charge of the burial services.
