Arthur E. Rust, onetime sports great, died here

Arthur E. Rust, 62, 1405 Grand Ave., died Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Mary Greeley Hospital where he had been a patient for a week. Mr. Rust had been in ill health for a year.

He was a well known coach and sports officials in the state and in the Big Eight Conference where he had officiated both football and basketball games for many years.

Born in Sheffield, he came to Ames in 1941. He was an insurance agent and had his own agency here.

A graduated of Des Moines University in 1924, he and his twin brother Orville W. were all-time greats in athletics at the university in the early 1920's. His brother is now athletic director at Cedar Rapids Washington High School.

Following graduation in 1924, Mr. Rust coached at the university for a year. He then went to Chariton and coached there until 1929, when he went to Newton, where he coached until 1941.

He was a member of First Congregational Church here and served on the zoning and adjustment board.

Survivors include his wife, E. Lucille; three sons, Dennis Arthur of Houston, Tex., Terry of Iowa City and Steven of Ames; Four brothers, the Rev. Henry L. Rust of Penny Farms, Fla., A. G. Rust and Joseph W. Rust, both of Sheffield and hsi twin brother, Orville, Cedar Rapids; a sister, Altye M. Rust of Sheffield and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Helke.
