OBITUARY

Death of Jacob Erb

Jacob Erb one of the pioneer settlers and long residents of Story county, died Thursday last in a hospital at Des Moines and was buried Saturday in the cemetery at Nevada. He was about eighty years of age and had been a man widely known in this section, as well as a man of wide experience. He was a "Forty-niner" in California, returned with a stake, entered with the government in 1854 his farm of the Ames road in Grant township, lived in Nevada for a time, went to Pikes' Peak with the gold rush in 1859, returned and located on his farm, engaged in the draft horse business and imported some of the first and finest horses that were brought to this county to improve the native stock, and was an all-round man of standing and influence. In his later years, however, his property got away from him largely, and at the end he probably had not so very much more than he needed. His habits were not in all respects examplary; but his impulses were right, and he is remembered with great kindness by the men of his generation. His home in recent years had been in Ames, and within the memory of most of us he had been identified with the west side of the county; but his acquaintance was not limited by any smalll section of the county. He left a family of grown children.
