Martha Louise Dana
Aug. 4, 1907 to April 9, 1999Martha "Louise" Dana, 91, of Fisherville, Va., formerly of Nevada, died Friday, April 9, at 2:10 p.m. at the Augusta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center from complications of a broken hip.
She was born Aug 4, 1907, in Diagonal to David D. and Marie Fogle Dolecheck. She married Robert A. Dana on June 6, 1939. He predeceased her in death on Feb. 20, 1988.
She graduated from Diagonal High School in 1926 and taught two years in Ringgold County School. She then went to Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls for two years. She taught four years in the Stratford High School. While in Stratford, she coached girls' basketball in addition to her commercial teaching duties and took her team to the state tournament. After moving to Nevada in 1935, she taught commercial subjects in the Nevada High School for four years and completed her degree from Iowa State Teachers College in 1938. Later she worked as a bookkeeper in the Mathison Ford Motor Company, was acting postmaster in the Nevada Post Office, office manager and acting administrator of Story County Hospital, bookkeeper for Meals on Wheels and secretary to the Nevada Cemetery Board. She retired as business manager of the Story County hospital in 1972.
She continued to live in Nevada until she moved to Virginia in 1993. She was a member and elder of the Central Presbyterian Church in Nevada, PEO, Child Study Club, Order of the Eastern Star and was active in the Democratic Party. She enjoyed nature's trees and birds, reading and traveling, especially to Czechoslovakia in 1973 and 1978, the country of her ancestors.
Survivors include two sons, Paul (and Shirley) Dana of Waynesboro, Va., and Thomas H. Dana of Portland, Ore.; three grandchildren; and a brother, Robert P. (and Betty) Dolecheck of Rockford, Ill.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband; a brother, Bernard Dolecheck, formerly of Clearfield; and a sister, Irene Dolecheck Cunning, formerly of Mount Ayr.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Central Presbyterian Church in Nevada with the Rev. Brad Braley officiating. Burial was in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery. Bacon Funeral Home, Nevada, handled arrangements.
