Final Rites for E. G. Schoonover Held Thursday
Colo, April 29 -- Funeral rites for Edward George Schoonover, 80, prominent Colo man, who passed away Tuesday morning, were held at the Methodist church Thursday afternoon followed by burial in the Schoonover family lot in Nevada cemetery.
The services were in charge of Rev. Alfred Schneck, pastor of the Colo Methodist church. The casket bearers were L. F. Ward, W. H. Donaldson, Delbert Dewey, Harry Maier, Orville Weir, and Forest Horner.
A male quartet consisting of Charles Lehman, Charles Wilson, Mark E. Wilson and Paul Henry, sand "That Beautiful Land," "The Upper Garden," and "In the Sweet By and By," accompanied by Mrs. Mildred Brinkman at the piano.
The many flowers were arranged and cared for by Mrs. Hattie Binder, Mrs. Forest Horner, Mrs. Thomas Manley, and Mrs. Chester Dickinson.
Edward George Schoonover
Edward George Schoonover, son of George F. and Nancy P. Schoonover, was born at Marshalltown, Iowa, April 23, 1866. He came to Story county with his parents before he was year old and remained here the rest of his life, having lived in New Albany township over three-quarters of a century. The last twenty-nine years of his life were spent in Colo.
On February 13, 1890, he was united in marriage to Lillian N. Rinehart who had lived within a few miles of him all of her life and attended the same school and church. To this union were born two children, Mable living at home and Eldon F. Schoonover living at Mason City. The Schoonovers celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1940.
Mr. Schoonover farmed until he moved to Colo after which he assisted Mr. Ransom and recently Mr. Greiner and Mr. Haas in the hardware business until his last illness. Following a short illness which dated from his wedding anniversary, he passed away at his home on April 23 on his 80th birthday.
He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge over 30 years and was a member of the Half Century club of the Modern Woodmen of America. He joined the United Brethren church while living in the Dalton community and later transferred his membership to the Colo Methodist church.
One older brother, John preceded him in death by fifty years. Surviving Mr. Schoonover are his wife and two children and a half brother, E. W. Martin, and other relatives and friends.
He was a man of industry and integrity, of a happy and affable disposition, and was one who made friends, wherever he went. He will be deeply mourned by his family and most kindly remembered by his many friends.
Relatives and friends from a distance attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Stover, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Stover, F. L. and Gene Stover, Miss Pearl Stover from Marshalltown; Mr. and Mrs. Lester Lynk and Mr. and Mrs. Homer Lynch, Green Mountain; Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Coughenour, Ronald Coughenour, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd McIntyre and son Duane from Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. McCaffrey, Mrs. Ica Rinehart, H. F. Brouhard, Mrs. P. Orning and daughter Mable, E. C. Orning, Ames; Mrs. M. L. Larson of Clear Lake; G. E. Rod of Story City; Mrs. Dora McKibben and Mrs. Eliza Ulum from Nevada.
The services at the grave were in charge of the I. O. O. F members from Colo.
