James Everett Shuey
Sept. 18, 1923 to Oct. 30, 1991James Everett Shuey, 68, of Gilbert died of cancer at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines.
He was born to Harvey and Vesta (Stier) Shuey in rural Mingo. he lived most of this life in Story County. He served as mayor of Gilbert in 1950 and 1951. He was firechief of Gilbert from 1950 to 1956. He owned and operated Shuey Garage in Gilbert and was presently owner and operator of Eva Lake Resort, near Akikokan, Ontario, Canada. he was a member of the Gilbert Congregational Church, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever and Northern Ontario Tourist Operators Association.
He served in the United State Navy as a boilermaker and was on the USS Hornet during World War II, serving in the south Pacific. He was part of the first landing party of six to go ashore only hours after the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Aug. 6, 1945.
Survivors include his wife, Arlene (Ripkey) Shuey of Gilbert; one daughter Judith Cunning of Mount Ayr, two sons, Matthew of Kelley and Shannon of McCallsburg; five grandchildren, and one brother, Robert of Newton.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Harold and John.
Funeral services were held Monday at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames. Burial followed at the Nevada Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the James E. Shuey Memorial Fund.
