John A. Hendricks was born October 18, 1926, the son of loving parents Ira and Carrie (Dobbe) Hendricks in Eldon, Iowa. He lived in Eldon through the fourth grade and then in 1935 his family moved to Huxley. John completed grades 5-12 in Huxley and then attended Simpson College for two years. The first year, he played on Simpson’s baseball team. John’s junior and senior years were at the University of Missouri. After graduating in 1948, he worked various jobs. John was united in marriage to Loretta Fortner on May 18, 1952. John was drafted into the United States Army in February of 1953 and spent most of his enlistment in Korea. After discharge from the Army, he took over his father’s insurance agency, which also included doing tax returns. On September 1, 1961, the South Story Bank and Trust opened a bank office in the insurance agency building. On January 1, 1984, John sold his insurance agency to John Walter and Tom Dunlap. John Schonhorst entered as a 3rd owner shortly after and became sole owner years later. John’s career included an insurance agency and over 50 years in the tax preparation business. He was a branch manager at South Story Bank and Trust and retired in 1988, although he continued preparing peoples taxes into his retirement.
John was a member of Fjeldberg Lutheran Church where he was treasurer for 15 years and taught Sunday school for 22 years. John managed little league baseball teams for 8 years, 2 of those as president of the 7 Town League. Other activities included Community Club, Kiwanis and about 10 years as Quartermaster of the Huxley V.F.W.
John passed away October 22, 2013 at Story County Long Term Care in Nevada at 87 years of age.
John is survived by his wife, Loretta Hendricks of Ames; his children, Randy Hendricks and Cindy Bourke; and his grandchildren, Mackenzie Bourke, Mollie Bourke and Anna Bourke.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and infant granddaughter, Elizabeth.
Memorials may be directed to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America, the American Cancer Society or The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
