Fred Tjarks, 72, of Roland died October 26, 2013 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 at the Fairview Lodge in Story City on Thursday October 31, 2013.

Fred was born on September 17, 1941 in Eldora, Iowa to Arend and Viola (Radley) Tjarks. Fred worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation for over 43 years, retiring in 2006. He enjoyed collecting Mickey Mouse items, Elvis Presley memorabilia, Teddy Bears and antiques.

Fred is survived by his daughter, Debra (Jason) Toppenberg of Ames; a son, Richard Tjarks of Nevada; three grandchildren, Samantha, Jessica and Dakota; a great granddaughter, Zoey; two sisters, Marilyn (Don) Kolbe of Story City and Carolyn Schmidt of Dubuque, Iowa; his very special friend Jean Olson of Story City and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Joyce Tjarks and a brother-in-law, Ray Schmidt.

Memorials may be made to Homeward Hospice.
