L. Pauline Poehlein
Oct 13, 1903 to Dec. 12, 1997

L. Pauline Poehlein, 94, formerly of Nevada, died Dec. 12 at the Solon Nursing Care Center from a respiratory ailment.

She was born Oct. 13, 1903, near Pilot Mound, the 13th child of George and Sarah Margaret Tomlinson Shaeffer. She graduated from West High School in Des Moines and attended Drake University in Des Moines, where he received a teaching certificate.

Pauline met Otto L. Poehlein while she was teaching school in Webster City, and they were married in the garden of the home of her sister in Des Moines on July 31, 1927. They lived in Webster City, where she taught kindergarten; Moline, Ill; Davenport; Iowa Falls and Nevada before moving to Solon in December of 1986.

She was a member of the Solon United Methodist Church and their women's groups. While a member of the Nevada United Methodist Church, she was in charge of the alter flowers every week and the Christmas decorations. She was a president of Nevada UMW and helped with all dinners served from the church kitchen. She was on the school board, in PTA and helped with fund raisers for the band projects. She had served on the ration board during World War II. She belonged to the Hobby and Garden divisions of the Nevada Women's Club. She was a member of the Eastern Star for more than 50 years and P.E.O. In 1963 she represented Nevada in the "Mother of the Year" contest.

Survivors include three children and their spouses, Vernon and Norma Poehlein of Solon, Mary and Dean Peterson of Warren, Ohio, and Paul and Barbara Poehlein of West Des Moines; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Otto, who died Aug. 13, 1988; and 12 brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec 16, at the Nevada United Methodist Church with the Rev. Douglas Peters officiating. Burial was in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Solon Nursing Care Center. Bacon-Cooper Funeral Home, Nevada, handled the arrangements.
