Bessie Groomes
Sept. 20, 1911 to July 14, 2001Bessie Groomes, 89, of Adel, died July 14 at Adel Acres Care Center of a heart ailment.
She was born Sept. 20, 1911, in rural Luther to Joseeph and Doretta Sutton. She graduated from Shipley High School in 1929 and married her classmate A.B. Groomes on June 27, 1931, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She was a farm wife and was employed at the ASCS office in Story County for many years. She enjoyed golfing, needlepoint, crocheting and was a 4-H leader when her daughters were members. She was a very good cook. She had a special talent for making homemade doughnuts on Saturday mornings. She was a member of the Methodist Church abd Guild in Nevada. She and her husband retired at age 60, both loved to golf and spend the winter months in McAllen, Texas in later years. Bessie enjoyed her daughter's dogs.
Survivors include her husband, A.B. Groomes of Adel Acres; two daughters, Janis (Kermit) Coggshall of Dallas, Texas, and Marlys (and Doug) Brooks of Dallas Center; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; four sisters, Georgia Sesker of Cambridge, Marjorie Birkestrand of Huxley, Pauline Taber and Maxine Fogle of Roseville, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Evelyn Pierce, Murl and Levi Sutton.
Her body was creamated and private graveside services will be held at a later date, Memorial contributions may be made to the Adel Acres Care Center's CNA's, all who have given loving care to her and her husband. Memorials may also go to the Raccoon Valley Humane Society of Dallas County in Adel.
