Clarence (Casey) J. Ebert, 92, died Sunday morning, Aug. 10, 1986, at Story County Hospital in Nevada IA. He had been a resident of Oak Park Care Center, Nevada, for eight months.
He was born Feb. 1, 1894, in Alta Vista IA, the son of George and Anna Rohwedder Ebert. In 1900 he moved with his family to Waverly IA where he graduated from Waverly High School. In 1914 he graduated from the Babcock Institute of Pharmacy in Des Moines. He was one of the three youngest members to become a licensed pharmacist and ws recognized in January, 1964, by Gov. Harold Hughes with at 50 year certificate.
After graduation, he worked in drug stores in Ackley, Waverly, Marshalltown and Dubuque.
In 1916, Casey came to Nevada and clerked in the City Drug Store owned by R. E. McKim.
Casey was the first Nevadan to enlist in the Army at the outbreak of World War I. He served three years at US bases and at Base Hospital 106 in France.
During the war he married Nellie Cooper of Maxwell IA. They were married in St. Louis MO on July 6, 1918.
After the war he returned to Nevada purchased the City Drug Store from R. E. McKim. He owned and operated the drug store until 1943. He then went to work for Glen Newton Lumber Co. in Nevada and served as yard manager until 1960.
After "retirement" her returned to pharmacy and did substitute work in Nevada, Maxwell, Tama, Toledo and Ames IA.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Nevada, Nevada Rotary Club, American Legion, Boone-Story Pharmaceutical Assn., Iowa Pharmacists Assn. and Iowa Lumberman's Assn.
He is survived by two sons, George H. Ebert of Ames IA and John C. Ebert of Prescott AZ; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren, and one niece, Mary Vance of Maplewood NJ. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Nellie Ebert, and two sister Adelaide Vance and Cora Ebert.
Visitation will be at Stevens Memorial Chapel, 26th and Grand, Ames, on Wednesday, Aug. 13 form 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at the United Methodist Church, Nevada with Rev. William Ballard officiating. Burial will be in Nevada Cemetery.
The Ebert family suggest that memorials be directed to the Iowa 4-H Foundation, Room 31, Curtiss Hall, Iowa State University.
