Helen Mae Tjelmeland
May 30, 1927 - April 15, 2013Helen Mae Tjelmeland, 85, passed away on April 15th, 2013 at the Zearing Health Care Center, Zearing, Iowa.
Helen was born May 30th, 1927 to Peter and Emma (Wierson) Vickre. She graduated from Radcliffe High School in 1944. She married Harold Tjelmeland on August 5, 1945 at the Zion Lutheran Church in rural Radcliffe. Helen lived in the Roland area all her life. Helen was a homemaker and helped Harold on the farm for the first 16 years of their marriage. On October 25th, 1961, she became a mom, when they adopted Darla Sue.
She enjoyed baking, crocheting, crafts and coffee with family & friends. She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church. Through the years, she was active in Ladies Aide, Circle and as Sunday School Secretary & Treasurer at Salem. She and Harold were also long-time members of Sons-of-Norway in Story City.In the late 70’s, Helen did volunteer hair care at Bethany Manor in Story City. Then in May of 1980, she went to work full-time at Bethany Manor in the Housekeeping Department. She retired from there at the end of May 2005. After Harold’s passing she remained in her home, with her families care, until July of 2012; that is when she moved to her final home at the Zearing Health Care Center.
Most important to Helen was time spent with Harold, her three grandchildren and Darla.
Helen is survived by he daughter, Darla Tjelmeland; grandchildren, Dustin Drees, Emma Drees and Mary Camp; sister-in-law, Lois Vickre. She also leaves behind many beloved sister and brother-in-laws and many many dearly loved nieces and nephews.She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold (June 6, 2006); brother Arnold Vickre; 2 sisters, Erma Beran and Esther Clark; 7 brother-in-laws, Virgil Beran, Dick Clark, Marley Anderson, Wayne Tjelmeland, Keith Tjelmeland, Wally Tjelmeland, and Gary Tjelmeland; 2 sister-in-laws, Sally Tjelmeland and Janice Tjelmeland; and a nephew, Ronald Vickre.
