Story City man dies in farm accident
A 20-year-old Story City youth died Friday after he apparently was overcome by silage gas while working on a farm about five miles southeast of Jewell.
Dead on arrival at Story City Memorial Hospital was Michael Hobbs, who was working with his father, Bert Hobbs, in a silo on the Viking Egg Co. farm when the accident occurred.
The elder Hobbs told authorities he and his son discovered a gas buildup in the silo and he tried unsuccessfully to rescue the youth.
The youth was pulled from the silo by a Jewell rescue unit after the farm's owner and an area veterinarian rescued the older man.
Dr Sam Kuramoto, Hamilton County medical examiner, tentatively ruled cause of death as asphyxiation, but said an autopsy would be performed.
Mr. Hobs was born March 13, 1950 at Iowa City. He was married to the former Rosella Johnson, June 6, 1970. They lived in Story City.
Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. from Elim Lutheran Church, Randall, with the Rev. C. A. Gisselquist and the Rev. William A. Greggerson officiating. Burial will be in the Story City Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife; his father; his mother, Mrs. Gladys Buerkley, Marshalltown; five sisters, Becky, Rita, Vickie, Dorothy and Peggy, at home in Randall; a brother, George, Nevada; and grandmothers, Mrs. Mamie Hobbs, Jewell and Mrs. Dorothy Smith, Marshalltown.
