Dewey Kaldenberg Sr.
November 30, 1917 - January 15, 2013Dewey Kaldenberg, 95, was the third of twelve children born to Rutt and Sadie (Sjaardema) Kaldenberg. He was born on November 30, 1917 on a farm near Taintor, Iowa. He passed away at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa on January 15, 2013 surrounded by his son and two daughters.
Dewey grew up in and around Sully, Iowa where he attended school and worked with his father in the family grocery store. After completing school he became a welder at Parsons Company in Pella. He married Minnie Mae Vandenberg October 12, 1940. During World War II he worked for the defense department in Davenport building tanks then in Savannah, Georgia and Bremerton, Washington building ships. Following the war he farmed for a few years before becoming an apprentice well driller. In 1953 he started his own well drilling business and moved to Slater, Iowa in 1954. During his years in Slater he served on the city council and was instrumental in making the city’s sanitary sewer system a reality. He was a member of the Community Club and the National Well Drillers Association. In 1983 Dewey retired and sold his business to his two sons. During retirement he and Minnie spent winters in Mesa, Arizona. They moved from Slater to Ankeny in 1993, spending their winters in Arizona through 2007.
Dewey is survived by three children: son, Bryce Kaldenberg of Slater; daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon (Ed Rood) of Cambridge and Rose (Rich Gardner) of Urbandale; daughter-in-law, Mary Jane Kaldenberg of Slater; grandchildren, Todd Rood, Grant Gardner, Tamra Poling, Lora Kaldenberg, Kristin Anderson, Molly Withers, Charles Gardner and Brian Kaldenberg; great-grandchildren: Jade Ryckman, Malorie Rood, Megan Rood, Logan Reneau, Baker Poling, Spencer Poling, Trey Poling, Owen Gardner, Sarah Withers, Abigail Withers, Aubrey Poling, Matthew Anderson, Lucas Anderson, Henry Gardner; great-great-grandchildren, Kenley Rodkey. He is also survived by six sisters, Agnes Masselink, Ruth Hannay, Sibel Hanson, Dorothy (Dot) De Ronde, Freda (Chic) Visser, Darlene Klein; one brother-in-law, Bob De Ronde and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Minnie; his parents; son, Dewey Kaldenberg, Jr.; and daughter-in-law, Marlys Kaldenberg; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Ada Kaldenberg, George and Lena Kaldenberg; and three sisters and the following brothers-in-law, Kathryn and Harris Van Zante, Josephine McKenna, Jeannette and Jerry Van Den Berg; Ed Hannay, Martin (Buck) Visser, Wayne Klein; nephews, Dick Kaldenberg, Scott Hanson; niece, Debra Kaldenberg; nephew-in-law, Sidney Holden.
