From Stevens Memorial Chapel obituary, Ames, Story County, Iowa:

Mavis Inez Kingsbury
September 2, 1921 - January 18, 2013

Mavis Inez Cunningham Kingsbury, 91, formerly of Ames, died Friday, January 18, 2013 while a resident of the Madrid Home. A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, January 26th from 2-4 pm at Stevens Memorial Chapel, 607 28th St., Ames, with a Celebration of Life Service at 3:30 pm. Inurnment at the Lincoln Cemetery in Polk City will be at a later date.

Mavis was born in rural Grimes on September 2, 1921; the daughter of Steven and Essie Harvey Cunningham. Mavis attended high school in Johnston and furthered her education at Drake. She married Weldon Brooks Kinsgbury on February 19, 1944 in Ames. Weldon died June 6, 2003. Mavis worked as a bookkeeper for Weldon's electric motor rewind shop in Boulder CO.

A great story teller, Mavis was a witty woman who believed you could find something funny in any situation. She enjoyed bowling, working jig saw puzzles, playing cards and chess, and water aerobics. Mavis was a member of Ames Women's Club, PTA, DAR and First Methodist Church. Mavis is remembered for her delicious desserts including brownies and sugar cookies, but she could not make a main dish without burning it. For Mavis, cooking a main dish was not complete without a call to the fire department.

Mavis is survived by her children, Audrey (Mark) Cammack of Danville, CA, Lowell (Debbie) Kingsbury of Ames, and Debra (Steve) Craig of Coos Bay, OR; 5 grandchildren, London (Mitch Sauberman) Cammack of Danville, CA, Brandon Cammack of Los Feliz, CA, Tracey (Aaron) Sammons of Germany, Sydney (Kyle) Kain of Des Moines and Abby (Kris) Gillmore of Beaverton, OR; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, June McKinley of Adel. She was preceded in death by her husband, Weldon; daughter, Lyn Spitzli; brother, Vere Cunningham and sister, Faye Gabrielson.

As a show of sympathy, the family suggests memorial contributions be directed to (and in memory of Mavis' sense of humor) the Lowell Kinsbury 2014 Corvette Fund or the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, 6520 North Andrews Ave, Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33309. On line condolences may be expressed at www.StevensMemorialChapel.com.
