Phyllis K. Williams, 93 of Monrovia California passed away on Thursday, December 13, 2012, at the Israel Family Hospice Home in Ames, Iowa.

Phyllis was born on March 7, 1919 in Buffalo, New York to Jack and Helen (Kubiak) Karrigan. She grew up in southern California with her mother and stepfather John Hassall.

She graduated as a Registered Nurse from Los Angeles County General Hospital in 1940 and married Wallace E. Williams.

Following World War II, she served as head nurse of the Pottenger Clinic in Monrovia, California until the birth of their son. For the rest of her nursing career she was a surgical nurse at Methodist Hospital of Southern California. She retired in 1984 and two months later joined the hospital volunteers, where she served for the next 25 years.

Phyllis was also active at her local community center where she enjoyed their weekly gatherings and taught knitting and crocheting until shortly before her death. Knitting and crocheting were life-long passions, and her knitting group made caps for children undergoing cancer treatments.

Phyllis is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Chris and Donnette Williams of Ames, Iowa, her brother-in-law Houston McGinness of Carthage, TN, her sister-in-law Ruth Harper of Colfax, CA, and nieces Clare James of Nevada City, CA, and Linda Rice of Olney, IL.

She is preceded in death by her parents, step-father, husband Wally on November 9, 1997, and sister Pat V. McGinness on October 25, 1995.

Visitation will be Sunday, December 16, 2012 from 2pm to 4 pm at Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada, IA. A private graveside service will be held Monday at the Ames Municipal Cemetery.

The family has suggested that memorials may be directed to the Israel Family Hospice Home in Ames, or the Story County Animal Shelter.
