OBITUARY

DEATH OF A. J. GRAVES.

Andrew J. Graves, for many years one of the most prominent citizens of the west part of the county, died on Tuesday of this week at his home a little south of Ames, and his funeral was conducted at Ames Thursday afternoon. Mr. Graves was a few months of eighty years of age and was a native of Vermont. He came to Story county in 1864 to become superintendent of the "Agricultural Farm," which was all there was at that time of the Iowa State College, and he was there located when the Northwestern railroad came through and the town of Ames was first marked on the map. Incidentally, he became the first postmaster of Ames, and in many other ways be has through the passing years been identified with public affairs. He was president of the Story County Mutual Insurance company and of the Ames Savings bank, and was a man of character and activity. Mrs. Graves died in 1908 and two of their cons, Frank J. and Zebina K., in the following year.
