Alice Marie Swanson

BORN: April 3, 1926
DIED: September 1, 2012
LOCATION: Ames, Iowa

Alice Marie Swanson, 86, of Ames, went to meet her Heavenly Father, surrounded by her family, on September 1, 2012. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, September 5th at Adams Funeral Home in Ames. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 6th at the Napier United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Alice was born April 3, 1926 to John Oliver and Isophene Amelia (Walker) Safly in Ames, Iowa. While growing up in Napier, Alice was very active in 4-H and played trumpet in the Ames Municipal Band. Before her marriage she worked at Younkers, Penney's and Woolworths. She married Arne Swanson at the Napier United Methodist Church on September 18, 1946. After marriage she was a homemaker and belonged to Boone County Women's Farm Bureau, Gideon's, Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), and Neighborhood Sewing Club. Alice was very dedicated not only to her family, but also to her church. Alice was a youth leader with her husband, sang in the church choir, taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School, and was a member of Napier Methodist Women's Society. Alice sat on the election board during voting. Alice loved camping and never missed camping at the Iowa State Fair. She would sit at the Davis Seed Corn booth in the evenings. Alice and Arne enjoyed wintering in Harlingen, Texas and did gift wrapping at Younkers at Christmas time. Alice enjoyed ISU basketball games for many years. Her most favorite joy was her grandkids and great-grandkids.

Alice is survived by her son Gaylord (Mary) Swanson of Ames; granddaughter Chris (Rob) Holm and their children Kyler and Karsten of Ames; grandson Aaron (Stephanie) Swanson and their children Jordan, Anna, and Grace of Urbandale; her sister Helen Brown of Ames; sisters-in-law June Swanson of Madrid and Dorothy Swanson of North Liberty; and many nieces are nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband and parents

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed toward Napier United Methodist Church or Israel Family Hospice House.
