Eileen Weigel, age 92, of northeastern Boone County, died May 12, 2011, at the Boone County Hospital. A Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, northwest of Gilbert, with Rev. Steve Brodersen officiating. Burial will be in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery.
Eileen was born in Boone County on January 18, 1919, the daughter of Thomas and Margaret (Moriarity) Garvey. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Boone in 1936. Eileen married Laurence Weigel in Boone on September 29, 1941. In earlier years, Eileen worked as a bookkeeper, did housekeeping at the Sacred Heart Rectory, and worked at Montgomery Ward and J.C. Penney's. She helped her husband farm in Harrison Township in Boone County and also did the bookkeeping. Eileen was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church and the Saints Peter and Paul Women's Society, where she held several offices. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, feeding and watching birds, cooking, and baking. Eileen had a great sense of humor and was very witty.
Eileen was preceded in death by her parents, husband Laurence, a son, Thomas Weigel, a daughter-in-law, Beverly Moorman Weigel, a great-granddaughter Madison Weigel, nine brothers, and a sister.
She is survived by two daughters, Margaret Weigel, RSM of Cedar Rapids and Leah Weigel of Ames; five sons, Paul Weigel and wife Marlene of Boone, Charles Weigel and wife Diana of - Ames, -Hugh Weigel and wife Donna of Story City, Patrick Weigel and wife Sharon of Ames, and John Weigel of Ames; 10 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and sister-in-law Iola Garvey of Boone.
Visitation was held at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall in Boone on Monday from 2 to 8 p.m. where a Vigil Service was held at 7 p.m. with the family present from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Visitation continued Tuesday at the funeral chapel from 8 to 9:30 a.m.
Memorials may be given to the Sacred Heart School Tuition Fund or to the family to be used at their discretion.
