Richard Thomas Maier
August 5, 1928 - June 21, 2011Richard "Dick" T. Maier, 82 of Ames passed away from heart failure on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa with his loving family by his side. To honor Richard's wishes he will be cremated and the burial will be held at a later date. No public services or visitation is planned. A private family memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2011 in Ames, Iowa.
Dick was born in Eagle Grove, Iowa to Sarah (Hamer) and Joseph Maier. He was educated in country schools and later attended Eagle Grove High School. Dick was diagnosed with Polio at the age of 15 and overcame the difficulties this disease caused.
He married the love of his life, Wanda E. Hemmen on September 17, 1949 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They moved to a farm near Woolstock, Iowa and later to a farm north of Eagle Grove where they farmed until their retirement in 1990. He was a member of the Wright County Cattleman's, and was a board member and a past President of the Farmer's Co-op in Eagle Grove. Dick enjoyed the company of many friends through his lifelong involvement in the raising and showing of beef cattle. The success he enjoyed showed the dedication he had to the show cattle industry. He was also a devoted fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and New York Yankees. He enjoyed spending time with his family, farming, and raising his show cattle. Following their retirement in 1990 Dick and Wanda moved to Ames, Iowa.
Those left to cherish Dick's memories are his loving wife of 62 years, Wanda; 3 daughters, Cindy (Steve) Lunning of Ames, Cathy (Al) Van Kley of Ankeny, and Chris (Kevin) Brooks of Slater; 1 son Tom (Rhonda) Maier of Nevada; 4 grandchildren Holly Brooks, Ryan Brooks, Mitch Van Kley (and his fiancée Emily Vaughan), and Tate Maier; 2 step-grandchildren James (Kim) Van Kley, and Jeff (Linda) Van Kley; 2 step great-grandchildren Tyler Van Kley, and Kaitlyn Van Kley; and 2 sisters Lucille Crovisier of Eagle Grove, IA, and Virginia Maher of Westfield, NJ.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, and 2 brothers Joseph E. Maier, and Bernard Maier.
In lieu of flowers a "Richard Maier Memorial Fund" has been established at First National Bank, 405 5th St., Ames, IA 50010 to be used for memorial contributions.Chet Ryan Mortuary, in Nevada, has been entrusted with the care of Dick and his family.
