Kenneth Carl Stow
December 6, 1922 - July 26, 2011
ObituaryKenneth Carl Stow, 88, of Ames, died Tuesday, July 26, 2011. The body has been cremated. The immediate family will have a private inurnment of cremains at Collegiate United Methodist Church. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 13 at 10:30 a.m. at Stevens Memorial Chapel, 607 28th Street.
Kenneth Stow was born December 6, 1922 in Eaton, Colorado to Glenn and Bertha (Tevebaugh) Stow. He served in the US Navy during WW II (3 years). He was always proud that he went around the world three times.
He relocated to Des Moines, IA in 1949 to study restaurant management. He managed the Blue Willow Restaurant, owned Ken's Kozy Inn, and managed the Redwood Café. Later in his career he worked for Delavan Manufacturing and Fawn Engineering.
While working at the Blue Willow Restaurant, Ken met Shirley Bates and they were united in marriage on October 24, 1950.
Ken was active in the West Des Moines Lions Club, West Des Moines United Methodist Church and volunteering for the West Des Moines Community School District.
The family moved to Ames in 1982. Ken was a member and volunteer at Collegiate United Methodist Church. He enjoyed traveling throughout his lifetime and always looked forward to the next trip.
Ken was predeceased by his parents and three siblings and their spouses: Dorothy (Joe) Miller, Howard (Shirley) Stow, and (twin brother) Keith (Claribelle) Stow.Ken was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his spouse of 60 years, Shirley; son, Kevin (Shelley) and three grandchildren, Kristopher, Betsy, and Kendall, all of Ames.
In lieu of flowers, Ken wishes donations be made to either:
Collegiate United Methodist Church, 2622 Lincoln Way, Ames, IA 50014 for large print materials and hearing instruments, or the Ames Public Library Friends Foundation, Library Renewal Project, 515 Douglas Avenue, Ames, IA 50010. With diminished eye sight, Ken enjoyed utilizing the library for audio books for entertainment.The family wishes to thank the nursing staff at Mary Greeley (2 South) and the Israel Family Hospice House for their extraordinary care and compassion.
