Darlene Drake

August 9, 1926 - March 2, 2011
Slater, Iowa

Darlene Nell Drake age 84, passed away at home on Wednesday, March 2, 2011. Visitation will be Tuesday March 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Soderstrum Riis Funeral Home in Slater, Iowa. Funeral services for Darlene will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 9 at the Slater United Methodist Church.

Darlene was born August 9, 1926, in Des Moines, Iowa. She was the daughter of Olaf and Grace (Peterson) Austin. She graduated from Sheldahl High School where she starred in basketball. On September 8, 1943, she married Robert “Bud” Drake, and they lived and farmed near Sheldahl for the last 68 years.

She lived her entire life in the Sheldahl area enjoying her family and friends, tending her African violets, baking, singing, loving her dog Lucy, watching sports, crocheting beautiful keepsakes, and volunteering. She volunteered at Iowa Lutheran Hospital with the Auxiliary for 26 years, serving as Surgical Waiting Room Chair, Executive Committee member, Treasurer, and Membership Chair, and served for 16 years on the Auxiliary Board.

Darlene generously shared her time, Scandinavian heritage, and sense of humor with her family and friends. Everyone who knew her admired her work ethic, independence, resiliency, and inner strength.

Darlene’s survivors include Robert “Bud”, her husband of 67 years; their son, Doyle (Randa) and their children, Todd (Christy) and Shana; their daughter, Donna (Dick) Schafroth and their children, Heather and Alex; and their son, Denny (Marsha) and their children, Whitney, Rob, and Brooklyn; three great-grandchildren, Jake, Sam, and Olivia; her sister Karen Decker; her nieces and nephews, and many relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, Darlene was preceded in death by her sister, Doris Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Iowa Lutheran Hospital Auxiliary and the Slater United Methodist Church.
