Margaret Sutherland Weatherspoon
BORN: August 7, 1913
DIED: March 29, 2011
LOCATION: Ames, IowaMargaret Sutherland Weatherspoon was born on August 7, 1913 the second child of Arthur and Alice (Jones) Sutherland. She attended grade schools in Des Moines and graduated from East High School in 1931.
She attended Parsons College in Fairfield for one year. The following year she transferred to Iowa State College in Ames majoring in Home Economics Education. After graduating in 1935, she taught high school for three years in northern Iowa.
In 1938 she married James Weatherspoon, a geneticist at Pioneer HiBred. They lived in Johnston, Iowa where they raised five children. Margaret was active in county and state 4-H work. She also participated in Women’s Farm Bureau, Home Economics Association, American Association of University Women and her church. She served on the board of the Broadlawns Hospital Nursing Association and was on the original board of directors for Calvin Manor Retirement Home in Des Moines.
Margaret always remained loyal to Iowa State University. She served as governor for the Iowa State Foundation and was a longtime member of the Order of the Knoll. She recently attended her 75th ISU reunion.
Margaret had a variety of personal interests. She was an accomplished pianist, an avid reader, enjoyed playing golf, and created beautiful needlepoint.
She is survived by her daughters, Martha Stevenson, Mary Bowden, and Jackie Reineke; grandchildren, Susan Stevenson, Sara Christie, Molly Scarbrough, James Bowden, Jennifer Reynoldson, Joanna Anderson, Andrew MacDonald, and Kristen MacDonald; and fourteen great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James; son, James Paul; and daughter, JoAnn Weatherspoon.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Iowa State University Foundation or a charity of choice.
