Reed McPhail

BORN: December 30, 1959
DIED: April 22, 2011
LOCATION: Ames, Iowa

Reed Douglass McPhail, 51, of Ames, died Friday April 22, 2011. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday April 25, 2011 at Adams Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to the service.

Reed was born in Ames on December 30, 1959 to Howard and Lea Ann (Baker) McPhail. Reed was very active in Boy Scouts and earned his Eagle Scout award in 1977. He was also active in the Scouting Order of the Arrow. He graduated from Ames High School in 1978. After high school, Reed attended DMACC where he earned welding and machinist certificates. One of Reed’s favorite things was ballroom dancing. He was a member and instructor of the ISU Ballroom Dance Club where he met Beth Kass in 1981 and they were married on December 29, 1982. In December 2010 he earned his Associates Degree in Industrial Education at DMACC. He enjoyed everything to do with the outdoors including fishing, hiking, camping, and bicycling. Reed’s other hobbies included reading, writing and wood working.

He is survived by his wife, Beth; daughter, Rose McPhail; son, Matthew McPhail; father, Howard; 3 sisters, Paula McPhail, Laura (Tom) Lind and Sara McPhail; 1 brother, Glen (Tamara) McPhail, many aunts and uncles; and 21 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Memorials may be made to Boy Scout Troop 196, Camp Mitigwa or Sommers Wilderness Canoe base.
