From Adams & Soderstrum Funeral Home obituary, Story County, Iowa:
Janet "Jan" Thomas
BORN: June 18, 1931
DIED: May 13, 2011
LOCATION: Ames, Iowa
Janet Eloise (Higgs) Thomas “Jan” completed her journey to heaven on Friday May 13, 2011. She passed peacefully at home in the care of family and Wesley Hospice after years of struggling with coronary artery disease.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday May 17, from 5-7 pm at Memorial Lutheran Church in Ames. Funeral services will be held Wednesday May 18, at 10:30 am at Memorial Lutheran Church with burial in the Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Jan was born to Wayne and Alice (Scott) Higgs on June 18, 1931 in Des Moines, the youngest of 6 children. She was raised in and graduated from high school in Nevada and attended what is now known as University of Northern Iowa. On November 11, 1951, Jan married Harriss Barry Thomas. With the exception of 7 years Jan and Barry lived their entire married life in Ames. Jan worked at the Iowa DOT, St Paul’s Lutheran Church, Jostens and Ames Public Schools.
Jan’s passions included family, maintaining high school friendships, spending summers at Okoboji, dedicating time to the needs of students at Iowa State University through Memorial Lutheran Church, and regular social gatherings of the “After The Game Group.” The medical issues she faced from age 47 on convinced her that she would not live to see grandchildren but her faith, will and fortitude allowed her to see, know and enjoy great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband Barry; sons, Chandler (Deb) Thomas, of Lakeville, MN and Kyle (Patricia) Thomas, of Lansing, NY; brother, Hal, 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Bernadine; brothers, Don, Marion and Jim and great-grandson, Lincoln.
Monetary memorials should be directed to Memorial Lutheran Church, Ames, in Jan’s name.
