Dr. James William Sievers, DVM
June 18, 1939 - June 5, 2011
rural Cambridge, IowaJames William Sievers was born June 18, 1939 to Walter F. and Caroline (Thorup) Sievers in Powell, Wyoming. James graduated for Albert City High School and then attended Iowa State University. He married Marigrace Ponsor on December 26, 1959. James graduated from the Iowa State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1964 and owned Sievers Veterinary Clinic in Slater for 39 years. He was a member of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association for 40 years and past president of the ISU Veterinary Medicine Alumni Association.
In Slater, James was on the Fire Department for 27 years, served on the Ballard School Board, a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, the Slater Business Association, the Slater Community Club, and the Fat Hats. James started Trees Forever in Slater, was on the Slater Centennial Committee, Slater Christmas on Main, Slater Fall Festival, the 4th of July Committee, and part of Prairie Creek Development.
James was recognized as a Slater Outstanding Citizen in 2008.
James enjoyed his work, looking at farmland, playing cards, and he especially enjoyed his grandchildren.
James passed away Sunday, June 5, 2011 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines at 71 years of age.
James is survived by his wife Marigrace of rural Cambridge; his son Dr. Scott Sievers of Jefferson; his daughters Lori (James) McCasland of Slater, and Beth (Todd) Kolander of Waseca, Minnesota; brothers and sisters Mayta Bird of Clive, Harold (Elaine) Sievers of Chanhassen, Minnesota, Margery Maxwell of Kansas City, Missouri, Phyllis Van Evera of Hinton, Carol (Gary) Siepker of Albert City, and Dr. Donald (Marilyn) Sievers of Huxley; twelve grandchildren: Clint, Curt and Peri Sievers, Matthew, Megan, Kelsey, Laura, Heather, Benjamin and Kristina McCasland, and Brock and Tyler Kolander; and many nieces and nephews.
James was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Leonard Sievers; and two brothers-in-law, Gary Maxwell and Richard Van Evera.Memorials may be designated to the Slater Community Club, the Slater Library, the Slater Fire Department, or the Iowa State University Class of 1964 Endowment.
