Martha Houge died on September 17, 2011, at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Visitation will be Monday September 19, 2011 from 5-7 p.m. at Salem United Church of Christ in Alleman. Funeral services will be Tuesday September 20 at 11:00 a.m.
Martha Krause was born on April 17, 1915, to J.W. and Anna Krause on a farm south of Slater, where she lived until 1981. She graduated from Sheldahl High School in 1932. On June 24, 1937 she married Irvin Houge. They spend the next 67 years farming, raising a family, and finally retiring to Huxley. Martha was a lifelong member of Salem United Church of Christ and spent many hours in service to her Church. She also enjoyed making quilts, cooking and baking, growing flowers, and reading. Her favorite times were spent with her family and friends. They meant the world to her.
Martha is survived by her 6 children: Donald (Mae) of Pekin, Illinois, Robert (Kathy) of rural Polk City, Richard (Betty) of Fort Dodge, Mary (Larry) Erickson of Mitchellville, Duane (Kathy) of rural Slater, and Kathy (Dennis) Parmenter of Cambridge, as well as twenty grandchildren, thirty-seven great-grandchildren, her sister-in-law, Hazel Houge, brother-in-law Bill (Diane) Houge, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Irvin, both parents, sister, Frieda Burrichter, and brother, Bill Krause.
Memorial contributions can be made to Salem United Church of Christ or Ballard Creek Community.
