From Adams & Soderstrum Funeral Home obituary, Story County, Iowa:

Velma Sargent

BORN: March 13, 1918

DIED: October 2, 2011

LOCATION: Ames, Iowa

Velma (Karns) Sargent, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away October 2, 2011 at the age of 93 after a brief but determined battle with lung cancer. Memorial Services will be held at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 1416 20th street, Ames, Iowa at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday October 6th, 2011.

Velma Louise Snyder was born March 13, 1918 in Underwood, North Dakota to Clara and Frank Snyder, one of 6 children. She grew up on the family farm and shared many happy memories of spending time with cousins and extended family. After high school, she attended nurse's training at Trinity Hospital in Minot, ND, and later worked as a nurse at Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis. She then moved to Knoxville, IA to work at the VA hospital, where she met her first husband, Worth Karns, who was returning from his service in the U.S. Navy. They were married July 4th, 1942, and moved to Ames so Worth could attend Iowa State University. They raised a daughter and two sons: Cheron Kay, Michael Wayne, and Patrick Eugene. In Ames, Velma worked at Mary Greeley Hospital and the National Animal Disease Lab—where she co-authored research published in an international scholarly journal--before retiring in 1975. She and Worth were ISU boosters and avid gardeners, traveling and enjoying retirement until his death in 1986. In 1995 she married long-time family friend Warren B. Sargent. They also enjoyed an active lifestyle, traveling abroad together before moving into the Northcrest Retirement Community in 2002. She and Warren remained deeply in love, acting like sweethearts, up until his death in 2007. Velma also participated in church activities, bridge club, and Tri T group, and her grandchildren especially miss her delicious baking.

Vel was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Clara; her siblings, Robert, Edward, Edith, Vivian, and Nadine; and her spouses, Worth Karns and Warren Sargent. She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Cherie and Wayne Allcott of Phoenix, Mike and Donna Karns, and Pat Karns, all of Great Falls, Montana; four grandchildren—Ann (Allcott) Berlin and Beth (Allcott) Yost, Cari and Chad Karns; their four spouses; and five great-grandchildren, Liam, Danny, Dylan, Hannah, and Calli, of Colorado and Arizona, as well as a large extended family on the Sargent side. They include Lee and Sherry, Phil and Susan, Dan and Pam and Ann and Robb and their families. Vel remained in good health into her nineties, visiting the family farm in North Dakota at a family reunion in 2008 and especially enjoying the visits of her cherished great-grandchildren, ages 5 months to 4 years, with whom she loved playing catch and reading books. Her girlish giggle and kind heart will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know her.

Memorial donations may be made to Homeward Hospice, 400 South Dakota Ave, Ames, Iowa 50014 or Northcrest Foundation, 1801 20th St., Ames, Iowa 50010.
