Edward Gene Nerem, Junior

BORN: April 13, 1932

DIED: October 12, 2011

LOCATION: Roland, Iowa

Ed (Junior) Gene Nerem was born April 13, 1932 to Edward S. and Georgia (Olson) Nerem in Roland. He attended Roland School and was a life long member of Bergen Lutheran Church. He married Rhoda Honderd on March 23, 1957 and together they raised four children. Ed served in the United States Army in Korea during the Korean War. After returning home, he was employed by Ames In Cross and later with Iowa State University, retiring in 1994. He was employed part time by the City of Roland Park Division for 28 years. He (along with his family) was care taker of the Sheffield Cemetery. Ed was a member of the American Legion #307, Roland, Iowa.

As a young boy he helped farmers in the area and continued doing so for many years. He enjoyed the morning coffee at the local grocery store and the Saturday morning breakfasts. For many years Ed, his brother Dave, and friend Argyle Amenson, made kumla for the local deli. Ed took great pride in keeping the parks beautiful for the community. His greatest joy was being with his family and friends. He especially enjoyed the time he spent with his grandsons.

Ed passed away Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, following a year long battle with esophageal cancer, at 79 years of age.

Ed is survived by his wife Rhoda; one daughter Ranae Nerem of West Des Moines; one son Ralph (Jill) Nerem of Jewell; his son-in-law Rick Kooker of Ellsworth; three grandsons, Devin Kooker, Jacob Kooker, and Garrett Nerem; one sister Joan (Dunn) Carsrud of Fort Myers, Florida; two brothers Gary Nerem of Roland and Dale (Charlotte Lindahl) Nerem of Boone; his brother-in-law Norman (Fran) Honderd of Ankeny; many nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son Ronald Nerem; his daughter Becky Kooker; and his brother David Nerem.

Memorials may be designated to Israel Family Hospice House, the Bliss Cancer Center, or Bergen Lutheran Church.
