Opal Pegg Bowman

BORN: June 20, 1910

DIED: October 20, 2011

LOCATION: Nevada,, Iowa

Opal "Pegg" Bowman, 101, passed away October 20, 2011 at the Rolling Green Village in Nevada. Visitation will be at Adams Funeral Home, 5th and Douglas Avenue on Sunday, October 23, from 3-5:00 pm. The funeral service will be at the First Christian Church, 6th and Clark Avenue in Ames on Monday, October 24, at 10:30 am, lunch to follow.

Opal grew up in a large family in Boone, IA with her parents Morgan and Estella (Killion) Davis and her siblings Mary, Chris, Andrew, Beatress, Nellie, Morgan, Catherine, Gladys, Ruby, and DeWayne. All her family passed on before her.

She and Vernon R. 'Turk' Bowman married on March 26, 1932 and celebrated their 72nd anniversary before he died in 2004. They had two children, Vernon D. Bowman (deceased March, 1986) and Leah Bowman, the surviving member of this family.

Opal's grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren live in various parts of the country with fifth generations in both Vernon's and Leah's families.

She was called Opal by her family and went by her nickname, Pegg, after she was married. Pegg and Turk resided in Ames for most of their lives together. They were a very active, popular couple that shared fun times with their many friends in bridge, bowling, dancing, cribbage, and golf. The two attended most Iowa State athletic events and were active in the First Christian Church. Pegg loved volunteering and spent many volunteer hours at Mary Greeley Hospital, North Grand Care Center (Abbington), the Heartland Senior Center, and Special Olympics.

Opal lived the last four years of her life in the loving care and companionship of the wonderful staff and residents at Rolling Green Village in Nevada. Iowa Hospice assisted in bringing her comfort in her final weeks.

Her greatest lifetime honor was to be selected as Elder Emeritus of the church. She was one of five elected to that highest position in the more than 100 year history of the congregation. It was her very proudest moment to be so honored.

Memorials may be made to First Christian Church, Ames, Rolling Green Village, Nevada or Iowa Hospice, Marshalltown.
