From Collins Gazette September 18, 1930

Marshall Finnie, well known and highly respected resident of Story county, passed away Friday evening at the Deaconess hospital in Marshalltown, where he had been taken on Thursday. While he had been a sufferer for several years, his death came as a distinct shock to his many friends, who sincerely mourn his passing and who extend heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved ones.

Obituary.

Alexander Marshall Finnie, son of George S. and Martha Ellen Finnie, was born near Maxwell, Iowa on February 13, 1878, and departed his life on September 12, 1930, at the Deaconess hospital in Marshalltown, Iowa at the age of fifty-two years, six months and twenty nine days.

He grew to manhood in this community and made hosts of friends wherever he went.

He united with the Church of Christ in 1901 under the preaching of the Handsaker brothers, and was steadfast in the faith to the end.

He was united in marriage Feb. 9, 1902, to Miss Lilly B. Stevenson of Washington, Iowa, who preceded him in death Oct. 8, 1909. To this union was born one son, Bernard Wade Finnie, who resides at Marshalltown, Ia.

On June 11, 1911, he was united in marriage to Miss Addie Shearer of Collins, who with the son, Bernard Wade, his aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Finnie of Collins, one brother, William Walter of Nevada; two sisters, Mrs. W. H. Nibel of Des Moines and Mrs. George Holmes of Collins, and a host of relatives and friends are left to mourn the loss of a dear one.

Marshall began to fail in health about three years ago and had been a constant sufferer when the --- of death called, in spite of all that medical skill and tender care could do to ease his pain. Throughout his suffering he continued to be the kind, loving and thoughtful husband and father that he had been throughout his life. In spite of his suffering it was always so evident that his thoughts were of others, and especially of his aged parents and his family.

Funeral services were held at the Collins Church of Christ Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock with A. V. Hart of Des Moines officiating.

A double quartet composed of Mrs. O. N. Serbein, Mrs. G. C. Fish, Mrs. Jesse Torry, Miss Zola Gilley, J. G. Gingles, Ike Kimberley, J. R. Witmer, Thos. Huntrod, accompanied by Mrs. Hugh Fertig at the piano rendered most beautifully the songs, "Face to Face", "It Is Well With My Soul" and "Have Thine Own Way, Lord."

The pallbearers who carried him to his last resting place in the Collins Evergreen cemetery were B. L. Mead, Ed Jones, Sam Jones, Frank Campbell, O. H. Gearhart and Ed Stratton.
