From Adams & Soderstrum Funeral Home obituary, Story County, Iowa:
Irene Lilian Hill
BORN: October 22, 1926
DIED: December 2, 2011
LOCATION: Story City, Iowa
Irene Lilian Bringle was born October 22, 1926 in Eureka, Kansas to Albert and Mildred (Stensby) Bringle. She lived in Del Rapids, South Dakota and Taylor, Wisconsin before moving to Randall, Iowa in 1943. Her mother died in 1940, leaving Albert and 4 children, Irene being the oldest. She graduated from Randall High School in 1944 and attended St. Olaf College, receiving her Bachelor's Degree in English in 1948. She enjoyed teaching high school English, speech, and directing plays for 4 years. Irene was married to Don Hill on December 28, 1952 at Elim Lutheran Church by her father, Pastor A.J. Bringle.
Irene and Don lived in White Bear Lake, Minnesota when their children were born: Larry, Nancy, Leslie, and twin girls Catherine and Miriam. Nancy died on Irene's birthday at 7 months in 1956 and Miriam at birth in 1959. Irene and Don moved to Omaha, Nebraska and lived there for 18 months before relocating to Rockville, Maryland. After 44 years in the Washington Area they moved back to Story City in July 2007.
Irene loved the Washington Area and fully embraced its history, culture, beauty and the politics. She quickly became an unofficial tour guide and hosted/entertained many visitors throughout the years. From the Capitol to Mt. Vernon, Williamsburg to Annapolis (and the Chesapeake Bay), the Smithsonian and art museums to the theaters, Irene enthusiastically enjoyed life in Maryland. She was also passionate about the political issues of the times—for many years she was a member of the League of Women Voters, serving as President of the LWV of the National Capitol Area from 1971-1973, which she found very satisfying. She was very active in church, a regular member of book clubs, a gourmet cook, and someone who loved to entertain.
Irene placed much value and importance on family and made her home a comfortable and welcome place to be. She also treasured her friends and counted many close ones, maintaining strong ties over distance and many years. She was a loving mother and very devoted grandmother to her 7 grandchildren. She treasured times of being together and especially at Christmas and at many annual family reunions at Bethany Beach, Delaware.
Irene passed away Friday, December 2, 2011 at Bethany Manor in Story City at 85 years of age.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her stepmother Clarice Bringle; her brother John Bringle; her sister Thelma Hughes; and two daughters, Nancy Hill and Miriam Hill.
Irene is survived by brother Paul Bringle (Audrey) of Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin; son Larry (Arlynne) Hill of Grasonville, Maryland; daughter Leslie (Jeff) Satre of Story City, Iowa; daughter Katie (Tom) Gandek of Bolton, Massachusetts; and grandchildren Tyler and Erik Hill, Josh and Rachel Rivenbark, and Kristen, James, and Daniel Gandek.
Memorials may be designated to Elim Lutheran Church or Riverside Bible Camp.
