Roger Grindeland
BORN: September 11, 1922
DIED: December 3, 2011
LOCATION: Ames, Iowa
Roger Grindeland, 89 of Ames died Dec. 3 in Ames. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7 at Bethesda Lutheran Church with visitation one hour prior to the service. Lunch will follow the service.
Roger Lyle Grindeland (Rog), was born in Highland Twp., Winneshiek County on September 11, 1922, to Harry and Myrtle (Johnson) Grindeland. They moved to Decorah when he was in the 2nd grade. After graduating from Decorah High School, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, spending 3 years in the South Pacific, during WWII. He attended college on a GI bill as a student at Luther College, and graduated from Iowa State College (now ISU), majoring in Farm Operations. He married Naomi Lundberg on January 9, 1953. Roger was employed by the United States Dept. of Agriculture for 30 yrs., devoting the majority of his time to Agronomy Dept. and was also involved with work in the Genetics Dept. He loved sports and his favorite was baseball. He was a staunch and faithful Chicago Cubs fan. Roger honed his own skills by playing horseshoe and participating in the Agronomy Golf and Bowling leagues. Roger was a long-time member of Bethesda Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 37, and the ISU Alumni Association.
Roger is survived by his wife, 3 children, 4 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, a sister, nieces, and nephews.
