Luther Ardean Matson
BORN: December 20, 1925
DIED: January 4, 2012
LOCATION: Story City, Iowa
Luther (Lute) Ardean Matson was born December 20, 1925 in Austin, Minnesota to Henry and Grace (Skogerboe) Matson. Luther graduated from Story City High School and entered military service in June of 1943. He was an airplane gunner in the Army Air Corp. and reached the grade of Staff Sergeant. He fought in the East Indies, New Guinea, China, Luzon, Southern Philippines and Western Pacific and was demobilized in December 1945. Luther received the air medal and air medal with oak leaf clusters for operational flight missions with the 400th Squadron, 90th Bomb Squad. His squadron was called the Jolly Rogers and was one of the last three men in his flight squad.
Luther married Phyllis Johnson March 26, 1945. Luther went to florist school in Des Moines and built a greenhouse in Story City. He and Phyllis grew their own flowers and provided the community with floral arrangements for ten years. He later went to barber school and joined his father, Henry, in the barber shop in 1956. Luther retired from barbering in 2004 after 48 years of cutting hair.
Upon his retirement Luther and Phyllis moved to Cedar Place in Story City where he lived until two months ago when he moved to Bethany Manor.
Luther was a Boy Scout, Eagle Scout and scout master during is younger years. He was a lifetime member of the Grace United Methodist Church and a member of the American Legion Post 59 and the Forty and Eight. His passions were his family, friends, singing, laughing and watching a good football game. Iowa Hawkeyes were "his" team to watch.
Luther passed away Wednesday, January 4th at the age of 86 surrounded by his loving family. He was under hospice care at Bethany Manor in Story City.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Phyllis.
Luther is survived by one brother, Connie (Bonnie) Matson, Mission Viejo, California; his two daughters; Claudia (Paul) Pauk, Story City and JoLene (Matt) Pepper, Gilbert; grandchildren, Angela (Craig) Block, Carrie (Andrew) Ricklefs, Christina Glaub, Mollie (Dan) Walter, Paula Pauk, Adam (Danielle) Pepper; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
