BORN: December 17, 1930
DIED: January 17, 2012
LOCATION: Ames, Iowa
Janis was born in Iowa City, December 17, 1930, to Kenneth Reese Marvin and Eleanor (Morning) Marvin. She graduated from Ames High School and from Grinnell College where she majored in Speech and Theater Arts. Following graduation she taught speech and theatre to high school students in Rockford. After briefly living in San Francisco, she returned to Ames where she began working at WOI radio and television station. At the time of her retirement she was the program director as well as the station's representative to the ABC television network. While at WOI she was active in American Women in Radio and Television, serving on the board and the board's foundation.
She was active in the Ames community, serving on the Board of Youth and Shelter Services, volunteering with the American Cancer Society and her local Neighborhood Association. She was an avid golfer and bridge player, and a member of the Ames Golf and Country Club, as well as Book and Basket.
She is survived by her sister, Shirley Marvin Freed of West Lafayette, IN; two nephews, David Reese Freed, of West Lafayette and Mark Morning Freed, of Mt. Pleasant, MI; and a great-nephew, Jacob Harrison Freed of Mt. Pleasant, MI.
