DIED: January 26, 2012
LOCATION: Ames, Iowa
Frank Arnold Schill, 85, passed away January 26, 2012, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. A visitation with family and friends will be held Monday, 7-8:30 p.m., at Bethesda Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 31, at Bethesda Lutheran Church.
Frank was born on February 18, 1926 in Harcourt, Iowa where he spent his childhood. He served in the Navy from 1944-46 on the aircraft carrier, the USS Vella Gulf, in the South Pacific. Frank went on to earn his bachelor's degree at Iowa Teacher's College, now University of Northern Iowa, where he studied math, industrial arts, and athletics.
He married Jane Evelyn Lennarson on June 18, 1949 and has been a devoted husband for 62 years.
Frank was a teacher and coach for 10 years before he moved to Ames with Jane and their four children in 1962. He started his own homebuilding business in 1959, which became Schill & Sons Inc., developing land and building homes in South Ames.
Frank was an active participant in the Ames community. He was a long-time active member of the Ames Homebuilders Association and the Ames Friday noon Kiwanis and Golden K Kiwanis clubs. He volunteered his time in support of the Boys and Girls Club of Story County for many years. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, golfing, spending time with friends at Friedrich and Old Geezer's coffee club, and of course, rooting for the ISU Cyclones. Everyone loved Frank for his positive attitude, common sense, willingness to help, sense of humor, loyalty and love of family.
He is survived by his wife, Jane; his four children, Mark (Linda) Schill, Mike (Nancy) Schill, Mary (Greg) Franklin, and Matt (Lori) Schill; his eight grandchildren, Sam (Jenny) Schill, Celesta (Wilson) Schill Napoleao, Jena, Lauren, Donna, Alex, Aaron, and Madeline Schill; and his three great grandchildren Jack, Emelia, and Benjamin Schill and brother John of Omaha, Nebraska
He is preceded in death by his parents John and Ida Schill and his two sisters Jean and Caroline.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Frank's name may be given to Bethesda Lutheran Church or Bethesda Food Pantry.
