George Kizer

BORN: November 18, 1920

DIED: March 16, 2012

LOCATION: Ames, Iowa

George Alvis Kizer, 91, of Ames, Iowa, passed away March 16, 2012, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. He leaves behind his wife of 70 years, Dorothy, his daughter Deana of New York City, his son George and wife Anne of Plano, Texas, grandchildren Amy Cuellar and husband Mauricio of Houston, and Mark Kizer and wife Adrienne of Austin, great-grandchildren Lucas and Sebastian Cuellar, and sister Alta Eubanks of Tulsa. George is preceded in death by parents James and Ida Kizer and brother John.

Born November 18, 1920, George grew up in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. He completed degrees at Oklahoma A & M (now Oklahoma State University), the University of Michigan, and the University of Oklahoma where he received his Ph. D. During World War II he served in the Army Air Corp. Immediately after service, he was band director at Wewoka, Pauls Valley and El Reno, all in Oklahoma. His El Reno bands were renown throughout the state, winning numerous marching and concert awards. Concurrently he served as President of American Bandmasters Association. In 1966 he joined the faculty of the Department of Education at Iowa State University, specializing in history and philosophy of education. He was also Director of Teacher Placement. He retired from ISU in 1991 as Professor Emeritus. For 35 years he served as treasurer of the Silent Knights flying club. He continued to pursue his love of music, playing in the Ames Municipal Band for 43 years as well as the Tarnished Brass quintet and the Central Iowa Symphony. In addition to all his other activities, he was always the Music Man.

A memorial service will be held Friday, March 23, 2012 at 2 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Ames. Internment of his ashes will occur that morning at a private ceremony at the Iowa State Cemetery.
