From Adams & Soderstrum Funeral Home obituary, Story County, Iowa:
Dorothea Katerine Lowman
BORN: July 30, 1916
DIED: April 4, 2012
LOCATION: Ames, Iowa
Dort was born in Fonda, Iowa to Thomas and Della (Gottfried) Hibbs. In 1927 the family moved to Ames so the children could all go to Iowa State College. The next year, the family moved to a farm near Kelley. Dort was a basketball star at Kelley High School. At sixteen, her mother passed away leaving the family in disarray. Dort got a job at Tilden's Department Store, shared a small apartment with her sister and Grandma Spielman, and graduated from Ames High in 1935.
Dort met her soul mate, Glen Lowman, in 6th grade and they married October 10, 1936. Starting in 1946, they managed the Des Moines Register and Tribune circulation office as a team. When Glen started selling real estate in 1963, Dort took over the duties as circulation manager and did so until her retirement in 1981. She belonged to the ISU's Tri-Delta mother's group for over 50 years.
In 1968, she and Glen bought a farm on the Des Moines River near the Ledges State Park. With her smile and sense of humor, Grandma Dort was a favorite with the grandchildren. Besides her wonderful oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, she loved to fish, hunt, garden and play cards. They hunted, grew, raised and caught a lot of their food. Getting out in the woods on a beautiful spring day to mushroom hunt was the best!
Dort and Glen loved cooking side by side and were frequent hosts to family and friends. Their biggest event was their annual pig roast. Summer time was full of golfing, fishing and boating on Clear Lake. They were avid dancers often going to Lake Robbins or Val Air in Des Moines.
She had a bountiful life and was very beloved. She passed peacefully with the help of Homeward's Hospice Angels.
Dort was predeceased by her husband, Glen in 2005, all of her brothers, Phaene Hibbs and his wife Orva (Fjelland), Jim Hibbs and his wife, Marie (Davis), Herb Hibbs and his wife, Maytha (Lowman, Glen's sister), and Fred Hibbs (surviving wife, Miriam) and one sister, Helen Ward.
Dort was survived by all three children, Sherry (Paul) Kantzler, Jon (Jill) Lowman and Terry Lowman (Mark Kassis), eleven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday, April 13 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Adams Funeral Home. Her funeral service will be at 10:30 AM on Saturday, April 14 at United Church of Christ with burial at Ames Municipal Cemetery and a reception afterwards back at the church.
In Dort's memory, please make memorials to YSS.
