From Adams & Soderstrum Funeral Home obituary, Story County, Iowa:
Walter "Bob" Twetten
BORN: January 9, 1927
DIED: April 15, 2012
LOCATION: Ames, Iowa
Walter Robert "Bob" Twetten of Ames died April 15, 2012 at the Israel Family Hospice after a brief, brave, and feisty battle with leukemia. The self-proclaimed old curmudgeon has gone to dance with his bride. A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday evening, April 18 at Adams Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 19 also at Adams Funeral Home.
Bob burst into this world on January 9, 1927 in Spencer, IA, the first born of Walter E. and Laurene (Driggs) Twetten. He graduated in 1945 from Spencer High School and served in the Air Force. After attending the Minnesota School of Business, he returned home to work in the family business, Twetten's Interiors.
After meeting Jean Marie Moeller, "the best-looking soda jerk I'd ever seen," he married her in Spencer in 1950. They raised three children together as they made homes in Spencer, Coralville, Ames, and Kewanee, IL, before returning to Ames permanently in 1973. During that time, he spent 30 years "on the road" as a wholesale carpet distributor. Bob lived by the motto, "carpe diem," although he said that really means "carpet everything." In total, Bob spent 57 years in the flooring and interiors business, in part because his first retirement didn't "take."
In the 17 days since finding out his startling diagnosis, he enjoyed receiving dozens of family and friends at his home, laughing and sharing stories. He bravely understood his fate and comforted those he was leaving behind. He also proudly accepted his 30 year sobriety medal in his final days. And he received and ate a ridiculous amount of snicker salad.
Left behind to cuss at the Chicago Cubs for him are his three children; Judy (Roger Ryan) of Cresco, IA, John of Lodi, WI, and Jim (Amy) of Ames; his four grandchildren, David & Kathryn Ryan, and Mindy & Tanner Twetten; two brothers, Jerry (Sandy) Twetten of Okoboji and Tom (Kay) Twetten of Craftsbury Common, VT; nieces, nephews, and a very treasured collection of breakfast hooligans. He directs all those remaining to absolutely insist on having fun.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 57 years.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the Chaplaincy Endowment Fund at Bethany Life Communities in Story City, Iowa.
