From Nevada Representative September 1, 1880

Died.

SMITH -- Aug. 26, 1880, at her home in Warren township, Story county, Iowa. Mrs. Margaret Smith, aged 53 years 4 months and 23 days. Mother Smith was born in Carncullough, Ireland, in 1866 came to this country. Her husband* by whose side she fought life's battle, preceded her to the better world by three years. When quite young she joined the Presbyterian church. The life of mother Smith was quiet and simple, marked by domestic rather than public virtues. In the fanciful fulfillment of the duties of a mother, she found an ample sphere for Christian service. As she lived so she passed awasy--trusting Jesus. She leaves six sons* to mourn her loss. The funeral services took place in the Presbyterian church in Nevada, conducted by Rev. Sage, assisted by the writer. Ah! sad, indeed is the hearth stone where she has for so many years been a wise counselor. Yes, you will miss mother. But, sorrow not as for those who have no hope. Follow her example looking forward to that happy reunion. A. K. BONE.

* Margaret McElhose Smith was married to Mathew Smith (1812-1877) in 1846 in Ireland. They had seven sons: Samuel, William M., James S., Hugh B., Robert, John (who died in infancy) and John M. All the boys were born in Ireland and at the time of their immigration in 1866, all six boys came with them.
