Ames Pioneer Gone.

M. Hemstreet, one of the pioneers of this city, passed away Thursday evening at 5:45 at his family residence on High street. For several months he had been a sufferer from cancer of the stomach, but not until the last three weeks had he been confined to his home. The disease baffled the best medical skill, he having gone to Chicago a few months ago to consult specialists, but little hope was held out for his recovery. Realizing that his earthly life would be of short duration he determined to make a trip to New York to visit a brother who was also in poor health. Since his return he has gradually failed.

M. Hemstreet has been a resident of the town since it was in its infancy and has wielded an influence which has helped to mold it into the thriving city that it is today. For the past year he has been a member of the city council and attended sessions when it was necessary that he be conveyed to the hall by carriage. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows lodge of this city, joining nineteen years ago as a charter member. He was also a prominent member of the Methodist church of the city. He served four years in the civil war, enlisting with a New York regiment, and was during his service promoted to lieutenant. He was a member of the G. A. R. of this city and has held some office in the order for a number of years. Thirty-five years ago when he first settled here, he worked at the carpenter trade. A few years later he conducted a grocery and restaurant business, and after closing out his stock embarked in the real estate business in which he has remained since. He was sixty-five years of age February 6th. By his own request an autopsy will be held over his body. He leaved a wife and seven children to mourn his demise, three daughters and four sons, Charles of Marshalltown, Fred of Chicago, Robert of Ames, Stephen of Carroll; Mrs. E. E. Tierney of Boone, Mrs. S. N. Kingsbury of Gilbert, and Mrs. C. T. Waltmire of Ames.

The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the M. E. church, under the direction of the G. A. R. and Odd Fellows. Services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. A. M. Shea. Interment was made in the Ames cemetery.
