From Story County Watchman May 19, 1905

DIED.--Major E. Hix was born in Alabama, Genesee County, N. Y., Oct 28, 1839, and came with his parents to Kingston, Ill., in 1848, where they resided for some time. On Dec. 2, 1864, he was married to Miss Susan A. Ring, at Sycamore, Ill. In Oct., 1869, the family moved to Story county, Iowa, settling upon a farm in Johnsons Grove. Some time afterwards he moved to Nevada and associated himself with M. C. Allen in the loan and abstract business in which he continued unto the day of his death. During his residence here he held the office of Mayor of the city for one term but like many other good men was not of an office seeking turn of mind. The funeral was held at his residence on Monday afternoon and rooms were crowed in spite of the inclemency of the weather. The sermon was preached by Rev. Payne, Rev. Nye of the Methodist church reading the scriptural lesson, and Rev. Sanford of the Presbyterian church offering the prayer. The male quartette furnished the music for the occasion. His two brothers Seymour, of Nevada, and Eugene of Illinois, together with his wife, are left to mourn his taking off to the better land.
