From Story County Watchman December 30, 1904
DIED--Tuesday night J. C. Thomas died at his residence just west of this city after a brief illness of pneumonia. He was born in Carroll county, Ind., Jan. 24, 1844, and in the fall of 1853 came with his parents to Iowa, and to Story county in 1854. He confessed faith in Christ while in his teens and joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He was twice married. The first time to Miss Minerva E. Tichenor who died leaving him with three children. He was married the second time to Miss Harriet I. Dinsmore whom he leaves with one child to mourn his loss. He leaves his wife and three children to mourn his loss together with five brothers and two sisters. The funeral was to have been held on Tuesday but owing to the severity of the storm it did not come off until Wednesday when the remains were interred in the Nevada cemetery to await the last call. As will be seen he was an old resident in this county and as such always stood high with the inhabitants all of whom extend to the stricken family their sympathy in this their hour of trial.
