OBITUARY

WILLIAM GRENBURY MULLEN

William G. Mullen died at his home in Atwood, Kansas, Friday, June 1, 1906, of paralysis. Aged 85 years, 3 months and 25 days. Thus passes from our midst one of our best known and most highly respected citizens. Earnest and honest in his convictions, he was outspoken in his sentiments without being obtrusive, as a neighbor he was helpful and sympathetic, as a citizen faithful to his ideals of public policy, and as a Christian man firmly founded on the rock of faith, his life was consistent and his example worthy of the creed he professed.

Born February 6,1821, in Harrison County, Kentucky, he early removed to Indiana, where he spent his young manhood, and whence as a volunteer he went as a member of Co. C. First Regiment Indiana Infantry, rising to the rank of sergeant, doing faithful duty as a soldier in the campaigns which ended in the success of our arms and the additi0on of a large area to the territory of the Republic.

January 2, 1851 he was united in marriage with Mrs. Jane Tindell with whom he lived nearly 45 years. In the spring of 1886 he came with his family to Atwood, and his residence here was continuous until the time of his death. Here November 28,1896 his wife died, and three years later, December 4, 1899, he was married to Mrs. Elizabeth Farrington, who survives him. By his first marriage five sons and two daughters were born, four of the sons are yet living - - M. W. of Colorado Springs, Colo.; W. H. of Nevada, Iowa; Chas. J., of Gillette, Colo., and A. S. of this city.

In his early manhood he was converted to Christ, and united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church, in which he was ever a faithful worker, holding office of ruling elder in that rganization. On his removal here not finding a church of his early choice, and being desirous of identifying himself with an organization of Christian workers, he united with the Congregational church of this city, of which organization he remained a member until his translation.

His funeral took place on Saturday last from the Congregational church, the service being conducted by Rev. J. S. Davis, before a large number of his friends and neighbors. The community has lost in his death a faithful, devoted friend. His was one of those lives which made the world better because it was lived. His remains rest in the Atwood cemetery.
