From Story County Watchman February 26, 1903

The funeral of an Wm. Benjamin Smith, at one time a well known resident of Milford township but lately of Des Moines, was conducted from the Methodist church in this city by Rev. H. P. Dudley at two o'clock Monday afternoon after which the remains were interred in the Nevada cemetery. Benjamin W. Smith was born in Ohio on Jan. 23, 1857, and died in Des Moines Jan. 31, 1903. He came to Nevada with his parents when he was but ten years of age and lived in this county continually until three years ago when he was compelled to go to Wyoming on account of his declining health. There he stayed for a few months and then returned to Iowa unimproved. He located at Des Moines that he might take treatment in a sanitarium and there he remained until death claimed him. In 1880 he was united in marriage to Lizzie Spring of Ames, who survives him. The union was never blessed with children. Mr. Smith was an Odd Fellow, and that order took part in the funeral rites.

In the same paper:

AMES.

Quite a number of relatives and friends from Ames and the country went to Nevada Tuesday p. m. to attend the funeral of B. W. Smith formerly of Milford township, but late of DesMoines. Mr. Smith was a son-in-law of W. W. Spring of Ames. The remains were interred in the Nevada cemetery.
